I can be an actress and director, at one time worked as a journalist, wrote scripts, even was a “literary black man” - I worked on the series.
In the cinema, I can quite calmly lead the set - as the second director made eight films and two series. It can be seen that you are a thorough person, dig deep. Is it because in childhood you dreamed of becoming an archaeologist? Well, I'm doing the documentary theater. I need materials that you can feel, touch with my hands. When I made the play “I am Russian, it was a real journalistic investigation.
I met with a huge number of Russians in Narva, tried to comprehend their life. I know that not everyone liked it. Well, yes, in Estonia there are a certain number of people who, let’s say, do not like me very much. And, mostly, these are Russian -speaking people. I remember last year we sat with colleagues in Tallinn in Lido and ate fried potatoes. Suddenly a woman comes up to me and says: “Are you Julia Aug?
And what did you dig in the play “Narva is the city that we have lost”? It turned out to be a detective story with him. There are several versions of the disappearance of the old Narva. According to one version, during the Second World War, the Germans bombed the city. On the other - they blew him up at the departure. In any case, the official Soviet version states that the old Narva was destroyed due to the heavy battles that went here in the year.
But in fact, the historical part of the city was destroyed not by the Germans, but by Soviet power. Of course, as a result of the bombing of the year, Narva suffered, but not so much as to wash the city from the face of the earth. I found all these conclusions in the archive. And one of my friend-Architects sent me a video on which the panorama of the old Narva is captured.
And there it is clear that almost all houses have been preserved boxes, many did not even have a roof. That is, all this could be restored. Moreover, in the year, Narva was included in the list of historical cities subject to historical architectural restoration. The corresponding order was signed by Stalin. For him, this city was connected with Ivan the Terrible, whom he, as you know, read, and he treated Narva as a historical artifact.
Who dared to disobey Stalin's order? Then the factor of time played a role. During the life of Stalin, they did not have time to restore the city, and Khrushchev, who replaced him, all this old man was a drum. She seemed even harmful to him, because he believed that the Soviet man of the new formation needed new cities, and for this it was necessary to build Khrushchevs. And in the m year, the authorities ordered the demolition of the historical part of Narva.
They simply drove the bulldozer and equalized the historical part of the city with the ground. You will not find this information anywhere on the Internet. Julia Aug. Photo: Masha Bakhtina And what is your play “Mom, and our cat is also a Jew? In preparation for this performance, I studied the archive of the Jewish Museum in Tallinn, read research on the Holocaust in Estonia, talked with people.
It turned out, for example, that in Estonia, few people know the tragic story of the Paris spouses - Harry and Keila. Harry was a famous actor, the star of the Estonia Theater, the favorite of the public. And his wife Kale, a Jewish by nationality, a famous hat. She was from Daugavpils and moved to Estonia because there was a more economically favorable environment for Jews - even women could open their own business.
When the war began, most Estonian actors were evacuated to Yaroslavl. But Harry decided not to leave. He did not believe in the atrocities of the Germans - at one time he worked in Germany and believed that it was a cultural, noble nation. And, of course, when the Jews were forced to wear yellow stars and Kale could not only enter the theater, but even ride a tram, Harry realized that he had made a terrible mistake.
He was called to the commandant’s office and offered to divorce his wife. He naturally refused. And he and Keyla decided to commit pair suicide. And the day before, they called friends for their birthday - they were peers and were born on the same day. And, according to the recollections of the guests of that party, it was amazing, fun, as if there was no war ...
So, after the first reading of this play, actor Taavi Tuplenkov, who played Harry, went to the Estonia Theater Museum, went to the theater archive and brought a huge stack of books about Harry to the next rehearsal. He excavated such amazing things about him that it later entered our performance.
This is me to the fact that not only I “dig” ... you are now engaged mainly by directing. Do you miss the acting profession? At first I was very missing, I was terribly missing. But now, in two years, I have already developed some kind of habit ... I can’t say that the directors completely forgot about me. The proposals are received, although not often. But I agree only to those projects that are really very interesting to me - either there is a cool script, or an interesting director, or partners.
And if an interesting fee? I can’t say that now there were such interesting fees. But, in any case, this is definitely not the main factor for me. What new films will we see you in? In October and November, I will have shooting in Latvia. This is a story that I really like. It began before the war, and now has turned into a large European project, where actors from different countries are being removed.
But I can’t tell anything more concrete, only we have everything strictly there, we gave a non -disclosure subscription. There is another project for which I hold my fists. I don’t even know if I will work there - I still did not have a trial. But if they take me to this project, I will be endlessly happy. This is a story about the life of a post -war village: people who have lost their arms and legs are returning in the war, children play a military patrol.
The story about military trauma is about what awaits us all after the war. And this story is shown through the eyes of a little girl. In the Estonian Drama Theater, your performance “Eisenstein” and the relationship of the artist and power was published. Do you think there is a roll call between Sergey Eisenstein, who supported the Russian revolution and-until a certain point-the Stalin regime, and the current Z-propagandists?
For Eisenstein, the revolution of the year was a colossal engine of creativity. He accepted her completely sincere and was a real inspired propagandist. His images still work, moreover, they are attributed to stories. The phrase “who comes to us with the sword is from the sword and die”, which Alexander Nevsky says in the film Eisenstein, did not speak the real Nevsky. This is the fantasy of the screenwriter.
But this phrase entered all Soviet textbooks as a historical fact. Or a scene from the "Babric" Protemkin "in which sailors are covered with a tarp and shot. A terrible scene from which the audience goosebumps walk throughout the body. In fact, this is also fiction - the executions took place differently. But this system of images works so - you begin to believe in it. And people who were participants in those events subsequently recalled that that was all the case.
They themselves began to believe in it. So here the whole thing is to the measure of talent. Eisenstein's talent was huge. And what can be considered the highest artistic achievement of the current government? Singer shaman? Well, sorry ... Help us continue to work!
